Kiss the Paper Love

The past week I haven’t been feeling all that great.  Have had a mild case of the stomach bug that’s been making the rounds. So, the last few days I’ve been taking it easy.

Yesterday, Kate came by to hang out for a bit.  She came bearing get well soon daffodils (so sweet) and a super thoughtful gift to celebrate the half-way mark of our collaborative project, Kiss the Paper.

She got me the book “Learning to Love You More” which features a thought-provoking and inspiring collection of artwork from people all over the world who responded to a series of assignments started in 2002.  What a cool creative project!  If you want to get your work on the website, they’re taking sumbissions until May 1st, 2009.

Secret #8: Empowering Partnerships and Alliances

cdb-2007-r2-017

This week’s chapter of The 12 Secrets of Highly Creative Women is definitely my growing edge. Secret #8 is about selecting empowering partnerships and alliances.  This, to me, is quite different from tapping into the support and wisdom of my guides.  I love connecting and collaborating with others.  That inspires me and feeds my soul.  What I find scary is diving into an actual business partnership where we are truly co-creating something together, sharing profits, etc. Even if it’s with someone I align with, lots of stuff gets triggered in me like the need to “protect” myself and my “intellectual property.” Feelings of scarcity and comparison can start to surface.  I get that it’s all fear-based because it’s outside of my comfort zone and when there’s money involved that probably just eggs on my saboteurs even more!

I’m also independent, individualistic, introverted and, given that I’m a 4 on the Enneagram, I have a strong need to be unique and different and often feel like no one else understands me.  All of which can be challenges in a partnership!

One of the most empowering partnerships I’ve experienced, though, was with my friend Brighid during the two years that we co-led a leadership retreat together.  That’s us in the photo above on a high-ropes course.  This particular physical activity tends to reveal dynamics at play in a partnership.  The key to getting all the way to the other side is for each partner to lean in 100%.   I’m in the black and white and you might be able to tell that I’m witholding just a bit, which is a typical pattern for me.  What really helped us enrich our partnership overall was lots of open communication, checking out our assumptions early on before they snowballed into drama and knowing we could trust each other to each bring our natural gifts.  The other key was having a shared passion and focus for what we were creating.

While partnerships can take a lot of work, I also know that there is tremendous learning and growth for me and my business when I stretch outside my comfort zone and partner with the right people. And while it can be more vulnerable, it can also be quite fun and fulfilling!

If you’re considering entering into a partnership or alliance with others, it’s really helpful to have a good sense of who you are – your strengths, your idiosyncrasies, your expectations and what you bring to the table.  Gail McMeekin has a pretty in-depth self-assessment in this chapter to help you define your collaboration profile.

Also, here are some resources that I’ve found useful in creating more effective partnerships:

AEDM Day 16: The Exploding Box

exploding box

Today’s creation: the “exploding box.”  After seeing my Unfolding Your Life Vision collage books and my collaged dream boxes, a lady launcher made me one of these surprising structures since she knew I would appreciate it.  I love how the box is simple yet complex. And that it unfolds!

I tried to follow a pattern that I found online.  However, I don’t do so well with measurements and instructions, so I ended up just reverse engineering it from the one I already had.

I haven’t figured out yet how I want to decorate the inside pages.  I might play with seasons, directions, elements and/or stages of my life.  I’ll save that for another AEDM post!  What fun!

Speaking of fun, I had my friends over for book club this afternoon.  We dined outside in the warm sun and chatted a bit about Jodi Picoult’s page-turner My Sister’s Keeper, but mostly we just gabbed.  I love the excuse to get together and catch up.

P.S. – Some of you have asked for instructions to make an exploding box.  I found another link that looks like it makes more sense than the one I tried to use, so check out these directions.

P.P.S – Here’s a link to my finished Year-in-Review exploding box.

AEDM Day 7: Orchids

A quick watercolor tonight.  Orchids are one of my favorite flowers.  Simple, elegant and beautiful.

Earlier tonight, Kate and I took a tour of Oakland’s Art Mumur.  Every first Friday of the month several art galleries near downtown Oakland have open studios.  We’d never been before, so it was cool to see such a bustling creative community in the heart of the city.  To top it off, Kate and I dined on some Louisiana style fried chicken and candied yams at a local dive.  Yum!  Definitely a fun night on the town.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Find more videos like this on 29-Day Giving Challenge

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a cause that has hit close to home.   I’ve lost an aunt to this disease while my mom, another aunt, one of my cousins and my sister-in-law are all survivors.  Fortunately, these strong ladies are all doing well.

I was excited to find out that the 29 Gifts cause of the month is to support breast cancer survivor Elysia Skye. Elysia was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer soon after her 24th birthday.   Throughout this ordeal, Elysia shows her strength and humor.  One of her mantras is “Die From Laughing. Not From Cancer,” which she has emblazoned on t-shirts for sale to benefit her cause.

She needs to raise a total of $30,000 for a necessary surgery.  Please join me in donating to Elysia’s surgery fund at elysiaskye.org. Checks can also be mailed to: Elysia Skye Breast Cancer Organization * PO Box 4573 * Valley Village, CA 91617.

Thank you to Cami and 29 Gifts for letting us know about Elysia’s story.  If you haven’t started the 29 Day Giving Challenge yet, please consider doing so.  With the tough times we’re facing in our world right now, it’s movements like this that can help sustain and promote hope and goodwill.  Also, Cami recently landed a book deal and is looking for story submissions.  What a great opportunity to spread the giving love.

Below, I’ve posted a few photos from the three Breast Cancer 3-Day walks I’ve done over the years.

During the very first Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in 1998, I walked 60-miles from Santa Barbara to Malibu with USC Annenberg grad school friends Shanti, Karen and Toni.

The 2000 San Jose to San Francisco 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk with friends Heather and Deb.

Brian and I walked together in honor of my mom in 2002.  Each walk was truly an amazing and inspiring experience.  If you’d like to take steps in the fight against breast cancer, check out the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer or the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure to find a fundraising walk near you.

What causes are close to your heart?  How do you show your support?  I’d love to hear your story.

Yoga in the Park

What a perfect way to spend a sunny Sunday morning – yoga in the park.  The enthusiastic and entertaining Laura Camp from Monkey Yoga Shala led a fun class at Willard Park in Berkeley.  Live drummers helped us move to the beat.  Laura even had us doing partner poses.  That’s her in the handstand above.  Reminds me, that I’ve been meaning to try an acroyoga class.

Yogis communing around the food provided by lulu lemon.  I look forward to more outdoor down dogs!

Blogging Brilliance

Thanks to social media expert Britt Bravo for coming to our Oakland Ladies Who Launch meeting last night to speak about blogging.  Britt shared with us some cool tools and tips for starting and enhancing our blogs.   Based on her presentation, I finally added an RSS feed link and e-mail subscription link to my blog!  Thanks, Britt!  Please check out Britt’s inspiring and informative blog Have fun. Do good.

Speaking of blogging, via twitter this morning, I heard of this exciting contest on Martha Stewart’s blogComment on her post and Martha may feature you on her blog!  Way cool!  And today’s Martha show was all about blogging and the studio audience was filled with bloggers blogging away on their laptops.  Just brilliant!  I loved seeing the creator of cute overload, too.

If you’re wanting to learn more about blogging and social media, I’ve included some great resources below.

The Ladies Who Launch site has several articles on social media and blogging:

The Pink Heel’s blog has a great overview of social media.

Empanadas of My Soul

Kristen’s book club selection was Isabel Allende’s sweeping historic novel Ines of My Soul.  I was engrossed by this tale of the strong and independent Spanish conquistadora who is said to have helped build Santiago, Chile.  In the story, Ines has a talent for making empanadas.

Since we book club ladies love our themed meals it was a great excuse for Francisca’s famous empanadas (from her mom Ines’ secret recipe).  With rolling pin in hand, Francisca gave us a lesson in how to assemble these savory treats.

We learned how to fold and seal the dough to keep the spicy goodness from seeping out.  We crimped the edges with a fork and coated the pastry with a glistening egg wash.

We dined on a cheese platter and fresh tomato salad with red onions and cilantro as the emapanadas cooked to a golden brown.  I can’t tell you how utterly amazing these empanadas were.  We each took home a few and I am looking forward to eating one tomorrow!

Some of my favorite book clubs have been when we do something interactive together like practicing yoga, teaching each other how to knit or sharing our creative projects.

It’s my turn next!  What suggestions do you have for a great read?  Would love to hear.  Thanks!

Be Your Own Boss Recap

Last Saturday was the annual Bay Area Ladies Who Launch Be Your Own Boss event.  Imagine a full day of inspiring and informative speakers, a gorgeous, sunny space filled to the brim with 350 vibrant, creative women and a buzz of entrepreneurial energy.  It took me several days to recuperate from all the excitement (hence not getting this post up until a week later!).

Kate and I shared a table to showcase our work (her design portfolio, my coaching business and the products she designed for me – The Right-Brain Business Plan e-book and my new Unfolding Your Life Vision kit).  Thanks to lady launcher photographer Monica Michelle for the beautiful photo of us above!

Had lots of late nights getting ready!  Above is a peek at the assembly line I had going for my new Unfolding Your Life Vision kit.  (BTW, kits will be available for sale online soon!).

We were amazed at how elegantly our table came together.  It helps that we have similar tastes!

Our lovely friend Hannah lent us a hand.  How awesome to have extra support that day!  Hannah and Kate incubated with me back in March.  It’s fun when friendships blossom out of the incubator in addition to all the other launching goodness!

Some highlights from the day were seeing so many familiar smiling faces, meeting many new launching ladies and getting such great response to my kits!  I enjoyed the panel about social media which basically reinforced my facebook and twitter habit.  The Real Good Project fed us a delicious, organic gourmet lunch.  My salmon salad sandwich was out of this world!  Oh, and my 10-minute chair massage was heaven-sent after being on my feet all day.

What I appreciated most at the event was experiencing how jazzed everyone gets about being their own boss.  How entrepreneurial women thrive on connections, community and creativity.  How together we are changing the way business is done.

Kate, Hannah and I topped off the night with a celebratory dinner at A Cote in Rockridge.  We were exhausted, famished and delirious from the record heat but that meal was incredible!  Great food and great company.  Cheers to being your own boss!

Happy Unbirthday

For some reason, Plaxo thought today was my birthday.  Colleagues sent me birthday wishes and e-cards.  It was pretty cool to have an extended celebration!  My actual birthday was on Tuesday.  I enjoyed my day by taking the afternoon off, hanging out with my friend Kate (who gave me the lovely orchid pictured above), going to yoga, having a white chocolate dream at Bittersweet and then Brian took me out for a nice dinner in Berkeley.  I also started off my b-day by writing what I’m grateful for on a card for my blessings box and what I hope for the coming year on another card for my wish box.

What I loved about getting the second round of birthday wishes on my unbirthday is that it reminded me of something one of the leaders in my leadership program talked about.  He mentioned that growth is the process of constantly being shattered and reborn.  So in effect, everyday and every moment is our birthday.  At any given instant, we have the opportunity to shed the old and embrace the new.   So, Happy Birthday to you, too!
