Inspiration & Writing Wisdom from SARK

OMG, that’s me with the wild and succulent woman herself, SARK!

This afternoon, I joined about 70 other creative souls in a packed room at the Hayward Library to participate in SARK’s Juicy Pens Thirsty Paper workshop.  What a treat to meet SARK in-person and experience her vibrant creative energy and warm spirit.  She had me in stitches as she shared one hilarious and fantastical story after another.  And when I wasn’t laughing my ass off I was nearly in tears, touched by her heartwarming tales.  The afternoon was filled with one delicious morsel of inspiration after another.  A few of the SARK-isms I’m savoring include:

  • “Delight yourself first and others will be delighted.”
  • “Action comes before inspiration. Inspiration comes from the actual doing of anything.”
  • Ask yourself, “How well are you loving yourself today?”

I also appreciated learning how SARK honors her introversion.  As a fellow introvert, it’s comforting to know that someone who is so successful and in the spotlight has found ways to balance her energy through honing her extroverted skills (she’s a riveting presenter and her energy lights up a room) and protecting her need to be alone and to not be busy all the time.  It was also good to hear directly from her how she can get distracted from her writing, but how she keeps her momentum through micromovements.  Last year, I did an Art Every Day Month post with the page of reasons why I don’t feel like writing from the Juicy Pens Thirsty Paper book.

One of the activities SARK had us do was to craft our own writer’s manifesto.  Here’s what I came up with:

We also filled in some micromovement wheels to help us find delightful, do-able actions that we could complete in just 5 seconds to 5 minutes.  I’ve already accomplished two.  The publisher catalogs from my trip to BEA are now stacked in a neat pile instead of strewn across the floor unintentionally acting as a makeshift pillow for Emmett’s head.  Also, I added to my new “I am a published author” vision board on my Vision Board iPhone app.  I included the photo of SARK and me and my writer’s wo-manifesto.  Woohoo for accomplishing a few steps toward my creative dreams today!

And here I am with my friend the inspirational Laurel Bleadon-Maffei who was there assisting along with her wonderful husband Wes.  My other creative buddies Chris Zydel and Michelle Favreault participated in the workshop, too!  It made the day even juicier to be surrounded by these wonderful women.

If you haven’t checked out Juicy Pens Thirsty Paper yet, I encourage you to give it a whirl.  It’s fun, inspiring and practical.  Also, I signed up for the e-course Juicy Journaling with SARK: A nourishing adventure to start your day off write.

When I ask myself the juicy question, “How well have I loved myself today?” my answer is “pretty darn well.”  I chose to say yes to being in creative community with likeminded spirits, I chose to honor my creative dreams by taking some micromovements, I delighted in affirming my creative gifts as writer/artist and last but not least I laughed my ass off. 🙂

A String of Serendipitous Events

uylv-htc-letter-200907

These past couple of weeks have been filled with serendipitous events.  I love when that happens.  As @peacemeals shared with me on Twitter, “It’s how the universe talks to us.”

Well, the universe has been sending me lots of messages that I’m on my path and in my flow.  The other week, just a I was having an intuitive hit about an idea for a friend, she sent me an e-mail.  Yesterday, when I sent an e-mail to an editor I met at Book Expo, she wrote back with amazement that she had just pulled out my file that afternoon.  And I experienced several more e-mail related synchronicities over the past few days.  I also discovered that a friend of mine works with someone that I’ve been wanting to get in touch with.  Crazy!

I got to meet with a potential client from out-of-state as she happened to be in the area while en-route to Asia and another new client happened to be traveling to the Bay Area so I get to do my Foundation Session with her in-person instead of over the phone.

On Monday, I happened to bump into my dear friend Julie Daley at Bittersweet and we had a deep, heartfelt discussion about life and creativity.

To top it off, today I received the card that Kimberly Wilson had us write to ourselves three months ago at the Hip Tranquil Chick retreat.  My goals then revolved around completing my book proposal with ease and having a fruitful trip to Book Expo in May.  Perfect timing considering I just finished sending out my book proposal today!

In the wise words of my dear friend Leah Piken Kolidas, “loads of serendipity tells me I’m headed in the right direction!”

What path are you on?  What messages is the universe sending you?  What synchronicities have you opened yourself up to?

Galleys Galore – Book Expo Recap

Last week I was in New York for Book Expo America, the largest trade show of the publishing industry.  For this first-time conference attendee and aspiring author, the show was overwhelming but also quite educational and inspirational.  I learned about and met various publishers and got a better sense of what goes on in the professional world of books!

I picked up several advanced copies (one of the show perks!) and I’m excited to dig in.  Plus, I got a sneak-peek at some cool titles coming out this fall including: Blogging for Bliss by Tara Frey and the Craft Inc. Business Planner by Meg Mateo Ilasco.  Definitely check these out!  I was drooling.

I was so busy wandering the halls and soaking it all in that I didn’t get to any of the seminars.  Heard there were some good ones on social networking and e-books/Kindle.  During my roaming, however, I happened to bump into the brilliant and witty author Karen Salmansohn who I saw speak last year at a Ladies Who Launch event for her awesome book Bounce Back.  She was tremendously helpful and offered valuable feedback and insights into some of my projects.  I am so grateful!  Plus it was fun to see her in action giving love advice for her new book, Prince Harming: Break Bad Relationship Patterns for Good Using the Timeless Secrets of Aristotle. Man, this woman is sharp and hilarious!

My friend Cami Walker’s forthcoming book 29 Gifts: How One Month of Giving Changed my Life was featured at the Perseus Books booth.  I loved reading an excerpt from the samplers they had out and loved seeing her book cover (different from these samplers) displayed on a big screen at the booth, too.  She has an amazing personal story.  I’m thrilled for her, her book and her giving movement.

And not only did I get to hang out with my college roomie, Matea, in Brooklyn before the show, I also got to reunite with my friends Rae, Moon and Lesley from Kimberly Wilson’s March Hip Tranquil Chick Retreat.  Lesley was actually at BEA as well representing the Girl Scouts.  I was impressed by the programs and accompanying books they have for helping young girls build leadership skills.  Things sure have changed since I was a Brownie!

I’m still integrating all that I learned from my research, the contacts I made and the guidance from my book coach.  And I’m extremely excited about the next chapter of my own book ideas!

AEDM Day 19: Book Sell Sheet Part II

So, I kept the commitment that I made in yesterday’s post to spend the afternoon today doing work related to the book.  I printed out drafts, organized my book binder and did some writing.  I also did the second side of the future book sell sheet.  I based it on the format of the other examples my book coach provided me but added a creative touch.

Feels good to have made more progress on my project.  And as luck would have it, our guest speaker at the SF Coaches meeting talked about the process she went through writing her book.  She had a friend call her each morning to hold her accountable!  She also shared how she helped her clients finish their books and other creative projects by simply taking small steps.  It could be just writing one paragraph each day and then slowly working up to a page per day.  Or spending 15 minutes a day painting.  Before you know it, you’ll be farther along that you every thought you could be!  I like that approach.

AEDM Day 18: Book Sell Sheet Part I

We just had our Ladies Who Launch Oakland member meeting tonight.  I invited bestselling author and publishing expert Jennifer Basye Sander to give us insider tips on how to get published.  Writing and publishing seem to be in the air.  On Thursday, I’ll be participating in a call “Ask the Author: Writing/Coaching” through the Creative Artists community that I co-lead on the Co-Active Network.  Plus, several of my clients happen to be working on books and I’m slowly plugging away at my own book.

A couple of months ago my book coach suggested that I do a visionboard-esque sell sheet for my book to help inspire me.  She sent me a few examples of traditional sell sheets and encouraged me to make one with my own creative flair.  So, that’s what I took on for my art for today.  I’m also working on the back side that has more details like bio, media and marketing highlights and testimonials.  Last year, I made a fake book jacket and that manifested in being featured in two books this year.  So, I’m hoping that by creating this visual reminder for myself, I’ll be more focused on my writing and finishing the rest of the draft.

I enjoy writing when I allow myself to jump in and be in the flow.  It’s just a matter of making that time and energy commitment.  As I reflect on passing the AEDM half-way point, I notice that I habitually save the art for the end of the day.  No wonder why, under normal day-to-day circumstances, art-making falls by the way side.  Same with the writing.  It doesn’t happen unless I carve out time on my calendar (and turn off my e-mail!!).  So, tomorrow I’m blocking out noon to 4:00pm to spend on writing and book-related work in preparation for my weekly 9:00am Thursday check-in with my ever-so-patient book coach.

P.S. – The Tuesday Kiss the Paper posts are up.  My question to the sisters this week was, “What do you wish for your sister?”

AEDM Day 6: Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper

juicy pens, thirsty paper

I never write in my books.  I love pristine pages, tight spines and the smell of a new book.  The thought of dog-earring a page or making notes in the margin makes me shudder.

That being said, SARK’s book “Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper” just beckoned for bright markers to dance all over it.  So, I got some juicy pens and filled out page 80 – the list of reasons why I don’t feel like writing.  There are so many things that I let get in the way of working on my book.  This was a great exercise in putting it all down.  I’m sure there are plenty more distractions and excuses (in fact I just thought of another one – I need to go exercise!).

I think these same reasons also stop me from doing art more often.  So, I’m loving being part of the Art Every Day Month Challenge as it’s helping me to just do it anyway!
